My Life in the United Kingdom
My life that I lead in Malaysia and in England is quite different.
Here, I live in the residence..meaning I have a curfew. how horrible is that.Even at home, I don't have a curfew..so it's kinda annoying for me that I have to be inside this building before 11pm every night. Here, I have met people of all sorts, from every possible corner of the world.
I have to say it has been quite interesting to mingle with them, always learning something new each time. Being away from home has definitely changed certain things. Although I have a curfew, I still have the freedom to do whatever I want without the influence of my parents. I enjoy that but sometimes still seek their advice. The weather here is also vastly different from Malaysia. We have a tropical climate there, where it's either sunny or it's raining. Here, the wonderful four seasons. The winter was really terrible though, but I enjoyed my time with the snow. It was quite difficult for me to get used to the change in temperature here. One thing that I found very odd when I first arrived is that all the shops and stores are closed by 6 pm. It's crazy because in my country, we would probably be heading to the mall around 8pm as the stores don't shut till about midnight. I do not like the fact that the stores close so early here. There is practically no where to go besides a pub or bar after six..which is awful. Maybe that's why the teenage drinking is high here. Well, what else can they do?..I respect that they have strong beliefs about spending family time. In Malaysia, it is more profit maximization orientated.During my time here so far, I have visited Scotland, which was absolutely amazing and Bristol, which is also a nice city, Leeds and Lewes and a few  other places. One thing which I realised is that almost everything in England is of a chain. Every city has the same restaurants, hotels, pubs & clubs. I think it would be nice to see more change. Something that is quite great about England is the liberty that people have. In my country, people are not as open minded as the people here. If there were to be a homosexual, no wait, even a heterosexual couple kissing on the street, people would stop and watch or may detest it. But here, people respect individual rights and accept people for who and how they are. I have learned many things here in England so far that has benefited me. For example, I am more aware and concerned about the environment now. I only ask for a bag at the store if I really need one. What's funny is that in Malaysia, the sales person would offer you some extra bags just for fun. It has been interesting noting the many differences between here and home.
